OVERVIEW:
Ah, everyone's time at the top must come to the end sometime, right? As you know I landed my dream job at Studio Distribution, only for the company to go bankrupt in March 2006. I was apparently completely blind-sighted by the whole deal. Oh well. I've interviewed at numerous record labels, however the industry just isn't looking all that heavy for an in-house design person anymore. So sad and so SCARY what's happening to the music industry. A lot of it is attributed to the digital download craze. Tons of independent and major label companies are feeling it. Hundreds of music stores have closed their doors and many more soon will too. I hope we find a way to get the music back soon! You can read all about Studio Distribution's demise here: http://www.coolfer.com/blog/archives/2006/02/studio_distribu.php
It's wasn't all bad. I got to create a huge marketing campaign with OP! for Questlove's album Babies Makin' Babies Vol. II. We had a HUGE album release party for it at The Canal Room in NYC, where he spun classic records. Only dude I know who could play big band jazz hits and kids in the club breakdance to it. He gave me a thumbs up for my efforts.
We also lost an amazing musician. Jay Dee (aka J Dilla) lost his battle with Lupis. I remember there was an album release party for his new album the night he passed away. The next morning we got the news in the office about his passing but couldn't mention anything about it to anyone. The mood in the office was somber. The following week we held Questlove's party, which explains his shirt which read "J Dilla Changed My Life." I know it's not much but I felt so honored to work on a few ads to promote his album Welcome 2 Detroit Vol. II. I'm going to miss things like this.
VERY IMPORTANT: If you are a label or an artist who was signed or assocated with Studio Distribution and you need your artwork, please contact me a kupiart@aol.com. I was able to save as many art files from the hard drives as I could. So if you need any repressings or need your old art work back, please let me know.
During 2006 I mainly freelanced, working on projects for the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, Downtown Music, The WBAI 99.5 FM Hip Hop Takeover, Shaman Work (John Robinson & CL Smooth), Mr. Len, and continued working with the Guru & Solar, and much more. Although this year was a tough one, still being in demand really helped.
I also befriended the incredible female emcee, Eternia. Amazing how much you have in common with someone. I also began a new romance with my friend turned love of my life, Christopher (or better known as Rugged N Raw). Yeah yeah, I fell for an emcee. UGH! Didn't want to do it. But he's been the sweetest and most incredible guy I've known.
So through the ups and downs, I'm still here. Let's see what 2007 has in store for us, shall we?
Best wishes everyone!
