Babies Makin' Babies II: Misery Strikes

In 2006, I was asked to design an album cover for Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson. The project was the second release in his Babies Makin’ Babies series, featuring rare groove tracks with melancholic and bittersweet vocals from Al Green, Ohio Players, Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta, Bobby Womack, Average White Band, The Delfonics and more.

I scanned some drawings he did for the album and had to make the album artwork resemble the first volume. I then created an entire campaign that consisted of CDs, LPs, Valentine’s Day cards, condoms, and posters.

The album was released February 14, 2006. Two weeks later, the distribution company closed. I always feared this was as good as it was going to get.

Magic Carousel Sundays

Magic Carousel Sundays brings weekly Sunday Day Party Series to Brooklyn’s Coney Island. Artists include Lil Jon, Timmy Trumpet, Breathe Carolina, Vinai, Bassjackers, Quintino and Pauly D, along with special guests and opening DJ sets. The Art Walls space will be transformed each Sunday into a lush, open-air oasis, featuring renowned DJs from across the globe, a massive turf lawn, bars, tables and daybeds, to welcome music lovers and partygoers back to Brooklyn’s new and improved Coney Island Amusement Park and Beach.

Shakeyface and Champain Era released the Champface EP, a little record with a huge sound. Brooklyn-based electronic and hip hop producer Shakeyface teamed up with go-go influenced rapper Champain Era of Virginia Beach to create songs straddling dance music and hip hop with great success.

I met DJ Juice E one night outside of Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe. She overheard me talking about designing flyers and she ran up to me asking me all about what I do. We exchanged numbers and she called me just a few days later. We were on the phone for hours. We had great chemistry. I started designing little party flyers and then it turned into flyers, album covers and I even maintained her website for a while. She has opened shows for notable artists and also started her own parties, like the famed Sucia Party. We became very close friends. I think I’ve designed more flyers and posters for her, than anyone else. What’s featured here are just a few! I’ve very happy to have been on this journey with her for over 12 years.

The 7th Boro is Hip Hop City. They represent BBoys, Graff Artists, MCs, and DJs that are sick of the nonsense that’s going on! Their mission is to bring all things hip hop. The music created for the people by the people. They (as well as I) feel that radio shouldn’t dictate what is hot or not. The 7th Boro is an alternate avenue to gain hip hop knowledge, share hip hop knowledge, and to get some good music.
